ishmael #3

Quote: "There he is in free fall, feeling wonderful and congratulation himself on his triumph. He's like the man in the joke who jumps out of a nineteenth-floor window on a bet. As he passes the tenth floor, he says to himself, 'Well so far so good!'

Question: How does this quote relate to our culture or the problem at hand?

Comment: Ishmael relates this to how our culture functions. We are constantly use up our resources all the while we are coming closer to our crash our destruction of the world by our own hand. Optimists think 'positively' and say "we've gotten this far without experiencing complete destruction therefore it will continue to go along smoothly". And others realize the problem at hand and yet none of us do anything to help solve the problem. We are satisfied with the estimates and conclusions our scientists and representatives tell us and continue our lives. We procrastinate and eventually it will lead to our demise. Or we will pass this burden onto our children and our children's children and so on. The biggest question is not how to fix the ozone or how to save the oceans, but rather a question that incorporates all our worldly issues...How are we supposed to live our lives? we take advice from our prophets and from our religious leaders but most of those only encorporate moral issues. As the book progresses Ishmael brings up the issue of finding the equation or rather the law (such as the law of gravity or aerodynamics) of how man should live their lives.

I see you read ahead in the book and I’m fine with that. I see your statements and as I read you say we accept and are procrastinating. Although this may be true you may also know of others who do try to save the environment. Also are the Leavers mentioned by the book involved with this and are they considered not saving the world if all most they are doing is just not contributing to it?

Hey Animal Farmer brings up a good question.... My thoughts are that not contributing to the destruction is the biggest contribution to saving the planet there is. It's much better, in my opinion, than starting a green campaign or selling recycle tee shirts. It's juts living according to a simpler principle that allows everyone and everything to live.
