Question: what connection does this quote have with the death of ishmael?
Comment: ishmael needed to find a pupil so he could pass on his wisdom & the narrator of the book needed to find a teacher to help him expand his ideas. with man gone will there be hope for gorilla this quote can be interpereted in many ways but i think that it shows how dependant ishmael was of his pupil. and with gorilla gone will there be hope for man ithink that this represents how dependant the narrator was of ishamel. they both needed each other on their quest to save the world.

q: hello mr. locker can i ask you a series of questions regarding our environment?
a: yeah okay
q: what do you think of the current human condition?
a: i think we is all good
q: do you contribute to the environment in any way?
a: uhm...well i recycle a little bit and well i think thats it
q: do you believe in global warming?
a: no i think that people are exaggerating way too much and that its going to happen regardless
q: why do you feel this way?
a: well the world used to be in an ice age and it melted i think that the world just naturally changes climates
q: what do you think of the growing craze of environmentally safe products? are they making a difference?
a: i guess that it makes a slight difference but there are too many people using regular products to make a huge difference

Question: How does this quote relate to our culture or the problem at hand?
Comment: Ishmael relates this to how our culture functions. We are constantly use up our resources all the while we are coming closer to our crash our destruction of the world by our own hand. Optimists think 'positively' and say "we've gotten this far without experiencing complete destruction therefore it will continue to go along smoothly". And others realize the problem at hand and yet none of us do anything to help solve the problem. We are satisfied with the estimates and conclusions our scientists and representatives tell us and continue our lives. We procrastinate and eventually it will lead to our demise. Or we will pass this burden onto our children and our children's children and so on. The biggest question is not how to fix the ozone or how to save the oceans, but rather a question that incorporates all our worldly issues...How are we supposed to live our lives? we take advice from our prophets and from our religious leaders but most of those only encorporate moral issues. As the book progresses Ishmael brings up the issue of finding the equation or rather the law (such as the law of gravity or aerodynamics) of how man should live their lives.

ishmael blog #2
in the book ishmael, ishamel asks his new pupil to tell him the story of the beginning of earth. the story most of us know is simply this
once upon a time the universe was created by the big bang. it was nothing but plants and organisms. but overtime the organisms slowly evolved into animals and as everyone knows darwin turned into man. and as they say "the rest is history".
this story is our urban mythology. just as greeks believed their mythology was how the earth came to be is how we believe in this story. if we were to go up to a greek a long time ago and say "your mythology is quoite interesting indeed" they might stare at us blankly and reply "what myth? this is the story of how our world came to be this is how the gods created all that the world is now" of course we know other wise. we might look at them in pitty becasue it is in our human nature to feel bad for those who seem primative and naive.
this story is the urban myth...the buzzing in the background, that ishmael was speaking of.
